Sde Bar Youth Village
Sde-bar farm serves as a home and family for young boys. The farm is located next to the Herodion, on the eastern side of Gush Etzion. Young boys and graduates work or go to school at the farm.
Sde-Bar is well-known for the the attachment the boys feel towards the farm. Even after graduating from the school and completing army service they return. The boys study in the local school which is also on the premises, and work towards receiving their matriculation certificate.
Breeding goats for milk and cheeses, olive tree orchards for oil, a new enterprise of olive logs for wood burning ovens and coals for outdoor cooking made out of olive waste, and training horses for horseback riding, are some of the farm's industries. The dairy farm produces special cheeses, yoghurts and Dulce de Leche, which are sold in the Jerusalem area.
Another important branch that operates on the farm is the production of organic olive oil. Olive trees were planted on tens of dunams around the farm. After the olive harvest, the olives are sent to an olive press and made into olive oil. Lately, Sde-bar has initiated a new project, the utilization of the waste products resulting from the production of olive oil, to be used for burning and heating. In addition, the youngsters have opened a welding workshop that carries out all the welding the farm requires.
At Sde Bar the staff believes in informal and alternative education for these children, who have been exposed at an early age to the ills of society and its bureaucratic facilities . Sde Bar's success has resulted in more referrals by the Ministry of Welfare and government agencies. Most are put on a waiting list until there is room to accept additional challenges.
A majority of the graduates enlist in the IDF and serve in elite units and then continue on to studies at the university.
